Fundamentals of Sample Preparation for Chromatography

RonMajors_75.pngWhen: 31 October, 2017 (9am-5pm)
Price: US$ 575
Presenter: Ronald E. Majors

EARLY BIRD RATE (ends 31 August)
USD 575 (standard rate - USD 675)

Taught by Dr. Ronald E. Majors, who has written and lectured on sample preparation and chromatographic technology for over 30 years, the short course will provide an overview of important sample preparation techniques used for the analysis of gas-, liquid-, solid– and semi-solid matrices.

Register to Attend this Workshop >>The approach will be to discuss basic principles of common techniques such as Liquid-Liquid Extraction (LLE), Solid-Phase Extraction (SPE), Solid-Phase Microextraction (SPME) as well as more advanced technologies such as pressurized-fluid extraction, QuEChERS, supported-liquid extraction, enhanced matrix removal (EMR) and membrane-based extraction procedures. The course will be practically oriented with a minimum of theory and a maximum of examples and “how to-do’s”. Discussions on proper sampling approaches, size-exclusion chromatography as a sample prep technique and sample prep for bioanalysis will be included in the coverage. A brief discussion on automation of sample preparation to improve throughput and reproducibility and to relieve the manual fatigue when encountering large numbers of samples will round out the short course.

Besides course notes, a 360-page book on sample preparation fundamentals for chromatography written by Dr. Majors will be provided for each registrant.

Key Learning Outcomes
The attendee should leave the course:

  • with a thorough understanding of the basic principles of many different modern sample prep techniques
  • with a knowledge of the application of sample prep techniques as applied to difficult pharmaceutical, chemical, biological, food and environmental matrices
  • knowing about newer techniques for sample preparation that are faster, provide lower detection limits and better recovery and require less manual labor
  • with an understanding of proper sampling methods so that the analytical process applied afterwards can provide optimum accuracy and reproducibility
  • with a knowledge about approaches to automation for high-throughput sample prep

The Presenter
For nearly 25 years, Ronald E. Majors was employed by Hewlett-Packard/Agilent Technologies, working in the area of sample preparation and chromatography column technology. He now serves as a consultant for Agilent under the banner of ChromPrep LLC. Prior to Agilent, Ron worked for Celanese, Varian and EM Science, now EMD Millipore. He is the author of over 300 publications in HPLC, GC, sample preparation and surface chemistry.
Ron has received many chromatography awards, including the Chromatographic Society’s 2007 Martin Gold Medal from the United Kingdom, named for the Nobel Prize winner, A.J.P. Martin. Dr. Majors has been an invited speaker, session organizer, and session chairman at many national and international symposia.
